OVERLAND PARK STREET TREES & ASH REMOVAL
Overland Park has a dedicated ash-tree removal program and street-tree guidance. If a tree near your curb was removed through city work, check the status of that work before booking private stump grinding.
Ask whether the stump is already included, what restoration is planned and whom to contact about follow-up. Tree removal, stump grinding and replacement planting can happen as separate stages; a stump left today does not necessarily mean it has been overlooked.
For a privately arranged removal in your yard, ask the tree company whether its quote includes the stump. If it does not, send Matt the remaining base dimensions, surroundings and access photos for a separate grinding quote.
If a root runs toward a sidewalk, driveway, curb or retaining wall, photograph the whole relationship. A close-up of exposed wood cannot show whether it continues underneath a slab or how much room the cutting equipment has.
Matt can assess the stump and selected visible roots. Grinding accessible wood is different from excavating beneath concrete, repairing a lifted sidewalk or removing an entire underground root system.
If paving replacement is planned, ask the installer what wood must be removed and whether the old surface needs to come out first. Share those requirements before accepting a grinding scope.
Identify roots attached to any living tree you want to preserve. Root cutting needs assessment; a root that is inconvenient for a mower or walkway is not automatically safe to remove.
Understand surface-root removalPoint out shrubs, perennials and bed borders that should stay. Include a wide photo showing room around the stump. Matt needs space for the grinder and screens, not just a route to the wood.
If the bed is being rebuilt, identify what your landscaper plans to remove before the grinding visit.
Flag known irrigation, landscape lighting, invisible fencing and other customer-owned lines. They may need separate identification from the applicable utility-locate process.
After bid acceptance, Heartland arranges locates and confirms readiness. Keep markings in place and tell Matt about features that are not shown.
Measure the narrowest usable opening with the gate fully open. Approximately 36 inches is generally needed, with turns, steps, soft ground and slope assessed separately.
Include both the driveway approach and the final turn into the work area. New paving or a delicate lawn is worth pointing out in advance.
At a managed property, the person requesting the quote may not be the person opening the gate or arranging the next landscaping visit. Give Matt a site contact, the exact stump locations and any access or work-hour restrictions.
For an HOA common area, identify who can authorize the work. For a business, show parking access and the space around the stump, and explain how the area is used during the day. Those details help Matt discuss where equipment and protective screens can be placed.
Label each stump and connect its measurements to the right photos. Include the landscaper’s plan for grindings, soil and planting so the handoff is clear. Completion photos can help an off-site contact see the grinding result.
Plan a managed-property quote
Matt uses tarps and shields during the work, then rakes and blows around the area. Grindings are gathered into a neat pile and stay on site. You should expect wood chips mixed with soil, not a finished patch of lawn.
Arrange hauling, suitable soil, grading and planting separately. Tell the landscaper that underground roots may remain beyond the agreed grinding area; full root excavation is a different scope.
Have the installer define the required excavation and base preparation. The absence of a visible stump does not confirm that the ground is ready for a footing or paved surface.

Grinding can address agreed, accessible wood after assessment. It does not repair concrete or establish what can safely be removed beneath it. Coordinate the root scope with the paving contractor and any relevant tree or city guidance.
Tell Matt about irrigation before the quote and identify the lines, heads and controls near the stump and route. Private irrigation may need separate locating. The work area must be assessed before grinding is confirmed.
