What happens to roots after stump grinding?
Some underground roots remain. Grinding addresses the stump and agreed root areas; it doesn’t extract the whole root system.

Grinding reduces the stump below the surface. It doesn’t extract the entire tree root system. See what stump grinding includes.
Selected visible roots
Agree on specific exposed roots. Grinding or selective hand cutting depends on the surroundings.
Remaining underground roots
Underground roots can remain beyond the work area. Full excavation is a different scope.
Can you plant or build where a stump was ground?
- Growing grass
- Plan the handling of woody material, suitable soil and seeding separately.
- Planting a tree
- Consider another planting location and remaining roots with your planting professional.
- Building or paving
- Confirm excavation and preparation requirements with that contractor. Grinding isn’t automatic site preparation.
Can exposed roots be removed during stump grinding?
Photograph roots you want addressed and show nearby beds, paving and structures. Identify any connected to a living tree. Matt can assess selected surface-root work, with the surroundings determining what’s practical.
