Which roots can stump grinding remove?
Stump grinding, exposed-root work and full root excavation involve different work. Here’s what each covers.
The stump
Grinding reduces the stump below the surface. It doesn’t extract the entire tree root system. See what stump grinding includes.
Selected visible roots
Agree on specific exposed roots. Grinding or selective hand cutting depends on the surroundings.
Remaining underground roots
Underground roots can remain beyond the work area. Full excavation is a different scope.

Identify roots connected to a living tree, irrigation and landscape lighting. Don’t cut a root before its role and location are assessed.
LOOK AT THE WHOLE BASE

This close-up shows why a photo of the center alone isn’t enough. Matt also needs to see the outer wood, exposed roots and the ground around the stump.
Mark the particular roots that interfere with mowing or planting. Include a wider view showing fences, paving and nearby trees so he can assess the areas you want addressed. Grinding selected roots is different from excavating an entire root system.

Root work with or without a stump
Send a wide view and identify each root area. Include access, nearby obstacles and whether a stump is also part of the request.
Stump projects start at $199, typically $199–$299. Separate root work is assessed by scope; there isn’t a published per-root rate.

Is this the same as excavating a root system?
No. Heartland's selected surface-root work addresses the agreed visible areas. It doesn't remove every underground root or automatically prepare a construction site.

Can I request root work without a stump?
Yes. Selected visible roots can be assessed on their own or with a stump. Mark each area in your photos, show the surroundings and identify any roots connected to a living tree so Matt can assess the scope.

Are there roots Heartland won’t cut?
Yes. A root connected to a living tree isn’t cut before its role and location are assessed, because cutting or grinding can harm or destabilize the tree. Roots over irrigation, lighting or other private lines, or under paving, need those constraints confirmed first. If a root can’t be addressed safely with this scope, Matt will tell you rather than guess.

There isn’t a published per-root rate. The root’s location, access and nearby paving, structures or planting influence the work. Send close and wide photos so Matt can review the scope before quoting.
