START WITH THE OBSTACLE
A single cleanup project can contain several different jobs. Identifying them up front helps you request the right service and arrange the work in a useful order.
The stump and its flared base get in the way of mowing, planting or a planned yard improvement. Measure the base at ground level, not just the top.
Stump grinding reduces the remaining wood below the surface. Ask about selected visible roots at the same time. Projects start at $199, typically $199–$299.
Exposed roots stretch into the mowing path, a bed or a proposed landscape edge. Some may be separate from the stump you are removing.
Selected surface-root work is assessed by location and scope. Show where roots lead and identify any living tree they may support.
Tall vegetation makes a defined area difficult to maintain. Hidden wire, rocks, cut logs and old stumps can change what equipment can do there.
Brush mowing starts at $375 for suitable projects up to four acres. Send acreage, vegetation photos and the route in. Tree removal and buried stumps are separate work.
In its 2022 forestry update, Olathe described removing emerald ash borer-infested trees. If your property has an old ash stump from an earlier removal, include it in your current landscape plan. Matt assesses the remaining wood by its size, root spread and surroundings, whether it was cut recently or years ago.

Olathe’s Community Enhancement guidance addresses damaged, dead or diseased trees as well as grass, weeds and exterior property conditions. That makes it useful to distinguish a standing-tree problem from the stump or overgrowth left afterward.
If you received a city notice, send Matt the relevant work description and deadline along with your photos. A notice about a tree, vegetation and debris may call for more than one service. Confirm the required result with the city rather than assuming a mowing or grinding visit satisfies the whole notice.
Matt coordinates tree removal from start to finish with experienced, insured tree professionals. Debris cleanup is included. When stump grinding is done at the same time, mulch cleanup and hauling are included, too. If there is also an overgrown section, identify its boundaries and known obstacles so brush mowing can be considered separately.
The cutting wheel works through the stump in passes. The wood mixes with soil, so the finished material is not clean topsoil. Matt gathers it into a neat pile after raking and blowing around the work area.
Include the roots that interfere with your mower in the initial request. Grinding the center of a stump does not automatically address every root spreading through the yard.
For new grass, arrange removal of excess woody material and suitable soil before seeding or sodding. Iowa State Extension explains that wood left in the planting area can affect moisture and nutrients, while decomposing pieces can leave settling behind.
Hauling, grading, soil and planting are separate from Heartland’s grinding scope. Share your lawn contractor’s schedule so the stump work fits before the finish work.
SMALL-ACREAGE BRUSH MOWING
A rough corner of a property and an entire open lot are different requests. Share approximate acreage, where the work should stop and which trees, beds or other features should stay.
From a clear, safe position, photograph the vegetation height and density. Point out slopes, drainage areas, old fencing, dumped materials, rocks and any stumps you know about. Dense growth can hide obstacles that are not apparent in a distant photo.
Matt assesses projects up to four acres, starting at $375. Mowing cuts the agreed vegetation; it does not remove underground root systems, establish finished lawn or guarantee that unwanted plants will not regrow. Discuss how you intend to maintain the area afterward.
Brush-mowing scope & quote guideFor multiple stumps, use simple labels such as “front lawn” and “back fence.” Include each base measurement and height above ground. For brush mowing, give approximate acreage and mark the boundary.
Take a close photo and a wider view. Include nearby paving, planting, fences and known private lines. Tell Matt about remaining tree removal or debris that blocks the work area.
Show the path from the driveway, the open gate and any turns or changes in level. About 36 inches of clear width is generally needed, but the full route determines whether access is practical.

A buried or exposed stump is a separate grinding task. Flag known stumps in the proposed mowing area and include them in the request so Matt can assess the services and work order.
That depends on what the notice requires. Share the specific items and deadline. Matt can explain the scope he can quote, while the city determines whether its requirements have been met.
After bid acceptance, Heartland arranges the applicable utility-locate process and confirms readiness before work. Tell Matt about private irrigation, lighting and other customer-owned underground lines, which may need separate identification.
